About BackBone Research

Atlas

Research Services for the Public Relations Industry

From client demands to unfolding news events, things happen fast. From a PR perspective, there is often very little time to game plan and form an adequate response. The idea behind BackBone Research is to inject a greater degree of preparation at the outset.

Instead of simply reacting to events as they unfold, the aim is to enable PR pros to intelligently plan ahead and respond quickly. What does that all mean? It means putting research — in terms of the full spectrum of the PR process — first.

Matthew Griffes — Founder, Sole Proprietor

For more than seven years, I've worked with a variety of companies – Ask.com, Microsoft and Cranium – as well as a network of small and medium sized PR firms that span the business technology, Internet, and consumer industries. My interest in starting my own practice stems from my desire to help PR as a practice function a bit better than it already does.

In addition to the short list of clients above, I've worked on behalf of a diverse group of companies – from established heavy weights to cutting edge start-ups: aQuantive, E-LOAN, McAfee, eBay, Archos, Ingenio, Wetpaint, Blist, and Avvo. Prior to getting BackBone Research off the ground, I worked at InterActive Public Relations, Inc. in San Francisco and gained industry experience promoting technology and Internet focused start-ups such as Red Herring, Ask Jeeves, FastForward Networks, and SoftCoin.

After living in the East Bay Area for nearly eight years, I recently relocated to Portland, OR with my family.
